Task 2: Vertebrates

Key Characteristics of Animalia (subphylum Verterbrata)
- Segmented spinal column
- Spinal cord
- Cranial cavity
- Bilaterally symmetrical structure
- Extrinsic eye muscles attached to eyeball and eye socket.
- Members of phylum Chordata

Examples:

Class Agnatha (jawless fish)
- Lack jaws
- Ectothermic (cold-blooded)
Class Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes)
-Cartilaginous skeletons
-Two chambered hearts
Class Osteichthyes (bony fishes)
-Bone skeletons
-Mostly ectothermic
Class Amphibia (amphibians)
-Ectothermic
-Metamorphose from juvenile water-breathing to adult air-breathing.
Class Reptilia (reptiles)
-Ectothermic
-Scaled skin
Class Aves (birds)
-Endothermic
-Lay shelled eggs
-Outer covering of feathers
Class Mammalia (mammals)
-Endothermic
-Outer covering of hair
-Give birth to live young

  2. Learnt: I have learnt some key characteristics of some classes of the Animalia Kingdom.
Discovered: I have discovered much more classes of Animalia Kingdom, like Chordata, Xenoturbellida and Tardigrada.

  3. I learnt that vertebrates have cranial cavity.

I discovered that there are many invertebrates that have not been discovered yet.

  4. I have learnt that for vertebrate, extrinsic eye muscles attached to eyeball and eye socket.
I have discovered that the spinal cord and spinal column are are 2 different things entirely. The spinal cord is made up of nerves and the spinal column are the vertebral bones that protect the spinal cord.

  5. I have learnt that vertebrates are members of phylum Chordata.

I have discovered that extant vertebrates range in size from the carp species Paedocypris, at as little as 7.9 mm (0.3 inch), to the Blue Whale, at up to 33 m (110 ft).

  6. 1) I have learnt vertebrates have a bilaterally symmetrical structure.

    2) I have discovered that fish are the only vertebrates that outnumber birds.

  7. I learnt that cartilaginous fishes have two chambered hearts. I discovered that vertebrates are bigger underwater, like the blue whale is the largest mammal (30m) , the Prionosuchus was the largest amphibian (9m) and the Leedichthys was the largest fish (up to 27m).

  8. I have learnt that vertebrates have two chambered hearts and have extrinsic eye muscles attached to eyeball and eye socket.

I have discovered that half of the living vertebrates are fish

  9. 1. I have learnt that vertebrates have a segmented spinal column, spinal column, bilaterally symmetrical structure and a cranial cavity.

    2. I have discovered that vertebrates make up 5% of all described animal species, and they range from 7.9mm (Paedocrypis) to 33m (Blue Whale).

  10. I have learnt that animals have extrinsic eye muscles attached to eyeball and eye socket.

I have discovered that vertebratespostanal tail at least during embryonic development.
